Environmental degradation as well as relative countermeasures have already become sensitive topics in contemporary society, and the mere mentioning of those issues will quickly give rise to controversies among the general. Some people argue that compared to individuals, it is governments and companies that can contribute obvious improvements, which I strongly disagree with.
In the short term, frankly speaking, visible outcomes of individual deeds may not be easily observed. Under the contemporary trend of environmental degradation, the range of environmental damages has already transcended one specific national boundary and become problems that bothering people from all over the world. The ozone depletion, for instance, has exposed the earth to greater ultraviolet radiation, which exerts immeasurable influences to every corner of the world. While such a problem originates both natural phenomenon and human activities, it is nearly impossible for individuals to make a change to reverse the tide.
However, the greater an environmental problem is, the more urgent it is to begin from each member. It takes considerable lengths of time to fight against present pollutions, during the process of which each individual’s devotion should not be ignored in order to combat this seemingly mighty enemy. To take the garbage classification as an example. Such an activity has been implemented in many countries for years. The engagement of every citizen has helped preventing the prevalence of poisonous wastes in nature while assisted the recycling of useful resources. There are already successful cases of environmental treatment that can prove the power of individuals.
What is more, though the executive forces of governments and companies shall be respected, one should never forget that every large organization is constituted by different people. There are individuals who make policies to set rules for environmental governance; there are individuals who implement strategies and carry out conducts for environmental protection; there are individuals who offer investment to support this grand undertaking; and there are individuals who provide intellectual properties to boost relative scientific innovation. The continual contributions made by large organizations are indeed sustained by different individuals.
In conclusion, one shall never look down upon the power of each person who is willing to engage in environmental protection.
